Cargill’s Healthy Food Ingredients Appeal to Market Trends at Nutracon and Natural Products Expo

MINNEAPOLIS - March 4, 2004 - Cargill will demonstrate how its ingredients help food manufacturers capitalize on key market trends, such as low carbohydrates, during the upcoming Nutracon and Natural Products Expo that will be held March 3-7, 2004, at the Anaheim Convention Center in booths #739 and #847. Cargill also will showcase sample products made with innovative technologies and highlight commercial products that contain Cargill ingredients.

Five Cargill businesses will be at the five-day Nutracon and Natural Products Expo. You can meet representatives of Cargill Health & Food Technologies (H&FT), Wilbur, Sweeteners, Soy Protein Solutions (SPS) and Food & Pharma Specialties (FPS).

With the heightened interest in low carbohydrate food products, Cargill H&FT anticipates significant interest in its Ascend™ brand of trehalose and Oliggo-Fiber® inulin. Ascend™ trehalose is a unique sugar made from cornstarch that enhances great tasting protein beverages by stabilizing proteins and enhancing flavors too. Emerging science indicates that inulin may boost calcium absorption and is used in many lower carbohydrate formulations. Cargill H&FT is excited to discuss the various commercial products featuring its heart-healthy CoroWise™ plant sterols, such as Hain Rice Dream® Heart Wise™, a lactose-free and dairy-free beverage that contains the same amount of calcium as whole milk.

“This is a dynamic time for Cargill H&FT and our customers. The functional food category is changing rapidly and Cargill is at the forefront of this new frontier,” said Steve Snyder, Cargill H&FT’s vice president for sales and marketing. “We are excited to share the health-promoting benefits of our ingredients with Nutracon attendees, and invite them to taste the future in functional foods.”

Cargill FPS expects continued interest in its natural bulk sweetener, Eridex™ erythritol. This product is ideal for the carbohydrate-counting customer because it is all natural, contains virtually no calories, has virtually no glycemic response, has good digestive tolerance and has the same taste profile as sugar.

Another product expected to draw a lot of attention is Actistar™ starch -- a resistant starch produced using a patented process that has a pleasant, non-sandy mouthfeel and bland flavor.

Cargill Pharm DC™ 93000, a directly compressible starch, offers tablet manufacturers strong binding capacity combined with fast tablet disintegration. This product offers manufacturers faster tableting speeds, high compressibility, and excellent flowability.

Cargill FPS also announced March 1st, a new strategic alliance with Riceland Foods, Inc. to manufacture, sell and distribute innovative lecithin products to the food and health-food industries. “This alliance with Riceland adds valuable new ingredients to our product portfolio and greatly strengthens the portfolio available to our application solutions group,” said Creager Simpson, president FPS North America.

“Cargill’s soy protein isolate – Prolísse™– is a great addition to many foods,” said Kevin Marcus, SPS’s worldwide director of marketing and business development. “Interest in high protein, low carbohydrate diets has focused attention on how well Prolísse™ soy protein isolate works in snack foods—such as the pretzels and nutrition bars featured at our booth,” he said. “Cargill has a wide range of low-carb product formulas available and can also help customers formulate great tasting, healthy products.”
