Cargill to showcase health-promoting product development and formulation capabilities at Hi Europe 2008

MECHELEN, BELGIUM – OCTOBER 14, 2008
- Responding to consumer demand for health-oriented, great-tasting food and beverage products, Cargill will demonstrate its expertise in partnering with customers in the EMEA region to develop health-promoting, functional products at Hi Europe 2008 in Paris, Nov. 4-6.

At the show, technical and marketing experts from Cargill (stand H002) will showcase the company’s health-promoting ingredients in a variety of prototypes that illustrate how Cargill shares its insights and expertise with customers to create new products to meet existing and emerging consumer needs.

Cargill’s health ingredient portfolio includes a comprehensive range of heart health solutions, weight management options and cholesterol reducers, all formulated to deliver proven functional health benefits while also assuring good flavour, desirable mouthfeel and straightforward manufacturing.

Ingredients featured in the prototypes will include:

  • Cargill’s CoroWise™ brand of plant sterols. Plant sterols have been clinically shown to reduce “bad“ cholesterol (LDL low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) by eight to 15 percent in as little as four weeks, with no reduction in levels of “good“ cholesterol (HDL high-density lipoprotein cholesterol). CoroWise™ plant sterols are available in a range of product forms, including the innovative ES101 free plant sterol powder. This powder is not only easier to use and process than steryl esters, but also includes a higher concentration of heart-healthy, cholesterol-reducing plant sterols than in any other steryl esters instant version. In addition, it has no impact on flavour or mouthfeel.
  • Cargill’s Omega-3 fish oil. Cargill’s Omega-3 fish oil sets a new level of quality in a product associated with heart health and with developing indications in cognitive health. It is produced sustainably from farm-raised Norwegian fish, and preserved much earlier than is typical under a nitrogen blanket – which reduces oxidation and eliminates the unwanted “fishy“ taste and odour. Cargill will soon offer Omega-3 in a powder form as well, providing valuable application opportunities in beverages, bakery and dairy products.
  • Cargill’s Barliv™ betafiber. Barliv™ betafiber, which is unique in the marketplace, is a high purity beta-glucan from barley. Beta glucans have been clinically proven to help maintain a healthy blood cholesterol level as part of a diet low in saturated fat. Because it has low viscosity, bland flavour, neutral mouthfeel and zero colour impact – as well as ease of formulation – Barliv™ betafiber opens up a new option for cholesterol management in non-dairy beverages, which may be incompatible with other cholesterol-reducing ingredients.
  • Cargill’s Zerose™ erythritol. Zerose™ erythritol is a unique, polyol sweetening option that, unlike other polyols, contributes zero calories to final food formulations while offering better digestive tolerance. It also has excellent synergies with other sweeteners, which can enhance the taste of final formulations. Zerose™ erythritol can be used as a sugar alternative in a growing number of food applications, including chocolate, chewing gum, dairy desserts and ice cream.

In addition to its deep and broad ingredient portfolio, Cargill offers customers unique consumer insights, state-of-the-art technical and formulation capabilities, regulatory and scientfic expertise, an unsurpassed global supply chain, and local market presence.
