Cargill to host media briefing at the 2008 American Dietetic Association Nutrition Conference and Expo
Expert speakers to discuss FDA Health Claims related to CoroWise™ plant sterols and Barliv™ barley betafiber
MINNEAPOLIS - Cargill is demonstrating its commitment to educating health care professionals about the benefits of health-promoting ingredients and functional foods by participating in the American Dietetic Association (ADA) Nutrition Conference and Expo. This year Cargill will host a media briefing on Monday, Oct. 27 as well as exhibit in the Expo Hall Oct. 26-28.
This year’s media briefing will feature Dr. Rebecca Reeves and Dr. Joseph Keenan discussing the latest developments in functional foods and beverages and the value of FDA heart health claims.
Dr. Reeves, Baylor College of Medicine assistant professor, registered dietitian and past president of the American Dietetic Association, will present a look at natural ways to lower cholesterol through diet, including the use of products that contain CoroWise™ plant sterols. Plant sterols have been clinically shown to reduce bad cholesterol and are backed by an FDA health claim. They are available in a wide variety of foods, beverages and dietary supplements that can be found in the “Where To Buy” section of www.corowise.com.
“Our intent via the website is to give dietitians a tool that features a family of brands containing CoroWise™ plant sterols, so they can easily recommend these products to clients interested in cholesterol reduction,” said Pam Stauffer, global marketing programs and communications manager, Cargill Health & Nutrition.
Literature featuring products containing CoroWise™ plant sterols, as well as coupons and other information is also available.
Dr. Keenan, recently retired Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Minnesota, and one of the leading national experts in the field of nutritional supplement research and cardiovascular disease, will review his discoveries from the recent human clinical trial on barley betafiber.
Barley betafiber is a concentrated beta-glucan soluble fiber derived from whole grain barley. It has been clinically shown to reduce cholesterol when consumed as part of a low saturated fat, low cholesterol diet, and was the subject of an FDA health claim. Cargill’s BarlivÔ barley betafiber is further characterized as a high purity (>70% beta glucan), low viscosity product and is reported in pending patent applications. These characteristics enable customers to use barley betafiber in a wide variety of food products that appeal to consumers, from carbonated beverages to snacks and cereals.
